Overview of current research funding in the health sector

The European Commission has implemented the Horizon Europe program and has published a series of thematic calls for project proposals. This includes grants that are financed from this budget year, but also for the year 2022.

The national contact point for the Horizon Europe cluster “Health” in Germany has put together an overview of the current calls on its homepage.

There are currently open calls with predetermined content in all six destinations in the health sector, which have the following headings:

  1. Staying healthy in a rapidly changing society
  2. Living and working in a healthy environment
  3. Fighting disease and reducing the burden of disease
  4. Ensure access to innovative, sustainable and high quality healthcare
  5. Unlocking the full potential of new tools, technologies and digital solutions for a healthy society
  6. Maintaining an innovative, sustainable and globally competitive health-related industry.

Under Objective 4, for example, the EU is funding research to develop intelligent medical devices for use in resource-constrained environments, as well as next-generation novel therapies to treat common and highly stressed diseases. Innovative tools for the use and reuse of health data are also the subject of the current round. Research into new methods for the effective use of real or synthetic data in regulatory decisions and health technology assessment are also among the selected focal points.

Due to the delayed start of the program, there are only one-stage application procedures for this year, with project proposals in most cases having to be submitted at the end of September or beginning of October. There will be one- and two-stage procedures again for the next year. Among other things, collaborative research, innovative measures as well as coordination and support activities are funded.

The overview of the health tenders is available on the NCP “Health” page, which forwards all details and application procedures to the Funding & Tender portal of the European Commission. The currently total of 836 open calls for proposals for all research areas can be viewed under the “Horizon Europe” section.
